Rahul Vaidya interview

The queen of Dandiya, Falguni Pathak, after a 16-year-old love affair with Mumbai, will now be playing in Gujarat. However, don’t fret, as Rahul Vaidya of Indian Idol fame is all set to rock the city at Mumbai's glitziest dandiya event, Sankalp. We speak to Rahul to find out about his preparations and more…

How did this deal come through?
The organizers of Sankalp liked my performance and approached me. I’m very excited to be part of Mumbai’s biggest dandiya extravaganza.

Falguni Pathak had been rocking Mumbai for years. They are pretty big shoes to replace. How does it feel?

Falguni was the only big performer in Mumbai. She was a force to be reckoned with, but she had no competition. If there is nobody to compare, she will obviously set the benchmark. I’ll give it my best shot.

Falguni’s fans don’t seem quite happy with the news. How do you plan to influence them?
I plan to convince them with my music. Her fans may be disappointed but at the same time my fans are very excited about the news. If 20,000 people have been coming in the past for the Garba, this year 40,000 will come.

You do a lot of stage shows but how difficult is it to perform for a Garba event?
It isn’t really difficult, but you have to perform for 9 days. Your voice gets stretched. So it becomes really tricky for a singer to maintain their voice.

But when it comes to Garba, aren’t the taal and sur important?

Good point. I agree on that. It is about the beat. Sur is important but taal is more important in Garbas as people are dancing.

For how many hours you would be singing every day?
I will be singing for two hours each day and on the last day, I will sing for four hours.

What kind of songs you would be singing?
I would be singing both Hindi and Gujarati songs.

Can you sing in Gujarati?
Gujarati and Marathi are somewhat similar so it shouldn’t be difficult.

Are you planning to release any albums soon?
No. Not anytime soon.

Do we get to see you on TV?

Maybe. If I get good offers. I haven’t really been getting offers for any show that matches my standard.

What about movies?

Why not? But I should also get offers that are worth doing. So I want you to tell all the directors that Rahul Vaidya is waiting for some offers.
