After delivering numerous commercial successes in Bollywood, musicians Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa of the composer trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy couldn't be happier to come back to their roots.
The guitarist and keyboardist have just started their new blues outfit, Apostrophe, with Shazneen Arethna on vocals, Karl Peters on bass and Debu Banerji on drums. "Loy and I are really happy to be performing the kind of music we are passionate about. Our music is very blues-based, with jazz and funk influence. It's good for the soul, I must say", smiles Ehsaan. Band vocalist Shazneen tells how their music has a "feel-good factor" to it. "As Bollywood composers, Ehsaan and Loy really wanted to get back to performing live, which they miss a lot. With this line-up, we have already put together four originals from some of the tunes Ehsaan had in mind" says Shazneen, who is a regular on the city's live band circuit.
Apostrophe played their first gig at a private performance a few days ago and want to take their live act forward in a big way. "Our first gig was fun but we still need to rehearse a lot more to tighten up the act," says Ehsaan. Shazneen chips in, "There was a kind of amalgamation among all of us."
Ask her about the choice of band name and she says, "Apostrophe denotes adding something more. One of us suggested the name and we all liked it, because in some way or the other, we all are adding our own bits to the band".
