Karan Johar has been conspicuously missing from the IPL stands and the fashion week ramps this year. He’s been busy with his chat show, Koffee With Karan 3, and the pre-production of his next film as a director, Student Of The Year, that rolls in July. But he says he will be cheering for the Kolkata Knight Riders during their quarter-final, semi-final and final matches.
So does he believe that KKR will be the IPL champs this season? “Of course, they will win,” Karan asserts. “I don’t understand cricket much, but Gautam Gambhir, who was one of the boys in blue who helped us lift the World Cup this year, is leading the side and has been really inspiring. So has Shah Rukh (Khan) with his motivational speeches. Both Kolkata and he deserve a win now.”
Next season, if the knights who are now wearing purple and gold, go in for any changes in their wardrobe, Karan says he will make the pitch. The filmmaker, who has collaborated with designer-friend Varun Bahl on a range of Indian and western menswear, now plans to make inroads into the market with his label. “Karan Johar+Varun Bahl will now be available in our own stores in Mumbai and Delhi. The brand can only grow with proper retailing. There are plenty of offers, but as of now, there are no plans of going international with it,” says Karan.
karanHis shirts, jackets and suits are a hit with his star friends and Karan will be showing some of his new designs at the Couture Week later this year. Varun and he had debuted with a star- studded show of their winter/spring collection at the Couture Week in 2009.
Meanwhile, Karan has also been approached by a leading publishing house to publish a book featuring the 14 columns that he wrote for HT Café. He says, “I had a great time penning down my thoughts, even though it took me a long time to do so. Unfortunately, because of time constraints, I couldn’t continue. The book will help me archive my writing. It should happen sometime this year.”
