After enchanting audiences for more than six decades with her evergreen voice, Asha Bhosle will now appear on the silver screen in a completely different avatar. The singer is acting in Maaee, which went on the floors yesterday, and will play the role of Padmini Kolhapure's mother.
"I was very nervous, but Padmini and my son Anand convinced me to take up the role. I was worried about how I will remember dialogues and face the camera, despite having performed in front of big audiences the world over," says Bhosle. "I have even sung a lullaby in the film, which suits my character as a mother and grandmother. I had inhibitions about acting earlier, but when director Mahesh Kodiyal told me the title, it brought back memories of my mother, whom we would call by the same name."
Maaee is also a comeback of sorts for Padmini. "I am happy to be back on screen after being in a comfortable but vegetated state for so long. This film is very close to my heart, especially because Asha ji is in it. It's a touching movie, but not a melodramatic tear-jerker," she says, adding,
Ask Kolhapure about her 22-year-old son Priyank's acting plans and she beams, "He is more than ready to take off. Sometimes, we have to hold him back. But he is grooming himself really well. Hopefully, you shall see him on big screen soon," she says.
Padmini will also be seen in Bachpan, which is completed but is waiting for release. "These days, it's easy to make a film but very difficult to market and release it. I hope it will see the light of the day soon," she adds. Filmmaker Yash Chopra gave the first clap for the film at its mahurat.
