Paramount’s animated feature Rango tops the weekend with the biggest debut of 2011thus far with an impressive $38 million.  Boasting an all-star voice cast led by Johnny Depp, the film is the first animated feature for special effects company Industrial Light & Magic, the company founded by George Lucas in 1975.  Families flocked to movie theatres to see the adventures of Rango, the chameleon hero sheriff of a lawless Wild West town.  Paramount’s recent animated releases How To Train Your Dragon and Megamind both posted solid debuts with $43.7 million and $46 million respectively and Rango nearly matched that level of success.

Limitless box office report

Relativity Media’s Limitless tops the weekend with a bigger-than-expected $19 million and in the process makes Bradley Cooper America’s favorite leading man.  Hangover star and favorite of women everywhere, Cooper impresses with his first truly non-ensemble role and proves that he can open a movie on his own.  A terrific marketing campaign that emphasized the star’s face and a tag line that clearly explained the premise of the movie totally clicked with audiences both male and female.  The story of a man who stumbles upon a pill that can accelerate brain function and thus offer the user limitless possibilities, the film is a PG-13 rated mind-bender that co-stars Robert DeNiro and is directed by Neil Burger who helmed the 2006 release The Illusionist starring Edward Norton.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid:box office report

Proving that it's no wimp at the box office, Fox’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules tops the weekend with an impressive $24.4 million.  Families and kids evidently want to follow the further expolits of Rodrick and Greg Heffley as they deal with various humiliations and occasional triumphs of adolescent life.  The original film in the franchise opened about just over ayear ago in second place (behind juggernaut Alice in Wonderland) with a solid $22.1 million and went on to earn $64 million domestically.  This installment clearly capitalize on the fact that it is the only live action family film in wide release in the marketplace and Fox backed it up with a terrific marketing campaign.

box office report of Battle: Los Angele

Sony’s sci-fi alien adventure Battle: Los Angeles created a solid weekend of box office mayhem with a better-than-expected debut of $36 million that put it at the top of the chart.  Feeling more like a summer-style blockbuster than a mid-March offering, the film stars Aaron Eckhart as the leader of a Marine platoon with the unenviable task of fending off a massive offensive by super angry aliens hell-bent on colonizing Earth.  Boasting big budget effects and relentless military vs. aliens action, young males will be particularly drawn to the multi-plex looking for plenty of action and lots of on-screen destruction.  Harkening back to the sci-fi Earth invasion movies of the late 1950’s, Battle: Los Angelesputs a modern spin on a tried and true genre.
